Calls for Waste Bins, Regular Refuse Collection, Community Collaboration Before Enforcement of Sanitation Laws

By Super Blessing :-

Environmental activist and tree-planting advocate, Oluwaseyi Abiola, popularly known as Treeman, has called on the Osun State Government to prioritise public education, effective waste management policies and the provision of sanitation facilities to address improper refuse disposal across the state.

Abiola made the appeal following visits to Igbona Market, Oja Oba, Ota-Efun and Alekuwodo, where he observed persistent refuse disposal challenges, stressing the need for a comprehensive approach to environmental sanitation.

He advised the state government to establish the necessary policies, infrastructure and public awareness programmes before intensifying the enforcement of sanitation laws.

According to him, traders, hawkers, food vendors and residents should be educated on proper waste disposal and their responsibilities in maintaining clean and healthy surroundings.

According to Thecasternewsng.com,  The environmental activist also called for the provision of waste bins and designated collection points in markets and other busy commercial areas, alongside a reliable refuse evacuation system to prevent waste from accumulating on streets and public spaces.

He urged the government to collaborate with market leaders, traders’ associations, community leaders, environmental organisations and volunteers to promote a lasting culture of cleanliness.

Abiola maintained that sanitation enforcement would be more effective and fair if residents were adequately educated, provided with the necessary facilities and clearly informed about the applicable regulations.

He stressed that enforcement alone could not solve the state’s waste management challenges, noting that public education, adequate infrastructure and community participation were essential to achieving sustainable environmental sanitation.

Speaking on his environmental advocacy, Abiola said his commitment extended beyond tree planting to promoting clean, green and healthy communities where residents take collective responsibility for their surroundings.

He therefore appealed to political leaders, policymakers, environmental agencies and other stakeholders to embrace collaboration with grassroots environmental advocates to develop practical solutions to waste management challenges across Osun State.

Abiola urged residents to make sanitation a daily habit rather than an activity undertaken only during occasional environmental clean-up exercises.

He concluded with a call for collective action, saying: “Let’s educate, let’s provide, let’s collaborate, then let’s enforce. Let’s make Osun clean and let’s make Osun green.”
