The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has stated that television and radio stations in Nigeria are not sanctioned without first receiving several warnings for violating broadcasting regulations.
Speaking at the 13th Vision Africa Training Institute held in Umuahia, Abia State, the South-East Zonal Director of NBC, Ijeoma Theo-Obodo, explained that stations fined, suspended, or subjected to other disciplinary measures had previously been cautioned multiple times for breaching provisions of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code.
According to her, the commission’s primary responsibility is to maintain the integrity of the nation’s airwaves and protect audiences from offensive, harmful, or inappropriate content.
Theo-Obodo rejected allegations that the NBC is unfair or selective in enforcing sanctions, stressing that all disciplinary actions are based on established regulations and due process. She also encouraged members of the public to report offensive broadcasts and unethical media content to the commission for investigation and necessary action.
The NBC official further expressed concern over some songs produced under the guise of religious content, noting that certain materials are unsuitable for public broadcast.
She, however, commended the Vision Africa Institute for organizing training sessions aimed at equipping media practitioners with the knowledge and skills required for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism and broadcasting.
Also speaking at the event, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha urged journalists and media professionals to harness Artificial Intelligence as a tool for national development, unity, and social progress, rather than using it to spread misinformation, fear, or public anxiety.
