Residents and stakeholders in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, have been urged to work together towards achieving a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment through improved waste management practices.
Speaking with Thecasternews, Environmental and Climate Change Activist, Oluwaseyi Abiola, noted that While indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads, in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations remains a major environmental concern, there are growing calls for the government to provide accessible and functional waste disposal facilities across the city.
Environmental advocates say enforcement alone cannot adequately address the challenge of indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing the need for a comprehensive waste management system that combines proper infrastructure, regular waste collection, public enlightenment and effective enforcement.
According to the advocates, markets, streets and residential communities should have accessible waste disposal points, while residents should be adequately informed about designated collection points and waste collection schedules.

According to the advocates, markets, streets and residential communities should have accessible waste disposal points, while residents should be adequately informed about designated collection points and waste collection schedules.
Traders, particularly those operating in busy markets and commercial areas, also need appropriate facilities to dispose of the large volume of waste generated daily.
They, however, stressed that residents and business owners also have an important role to play in keeping the city clean.
They urged citizens to make proper use of waste disposal facilities once provided by the government and desist from turning roads, gutters and drainage channels into dumping grounds.
The advocates maintained that a cleaner Osogbo would require a collective commitment from government, residents, traders, environmental agencies and other stakeholders.
They said: “Government must provide the system. Citizens must use the system. Together, we can keep Osogbo clean.”
They further noted that the waste management challenge should not be viewed merely as an issue of environmental sanitation, but as a public health, community development and sustainability concern.
According to them, the quality of the environment being created today will have a direct impact on future generations, making it imperative for all stakeholders to take deliberate steps towards building a cleaner and healthier Osogbo.
The call comes amid renewed concerns over waste disposal and environmental cleanliness in parts of Osogbo, with stakeholders advocating a practical and sustainable approach to waste management.
