An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo has ordered the remand of two brothers, Abiodun Atoyebi, 29, and Sodiq Atoyebi, 33, at the Ilesa Correctional Centre over allegations of raping an eight-year-old girl.

The defendants were arraigned before Justice Yinka Aderibigbe on an eight-count charge bordering on rape and unlawful sexual intercourse, allegedly committed between 2022 and 2024 in Zone 10, near the Capital Hotel area of Osogbo, and at Temidire Estate, Osogbo.

The State Counsel, Labo Popoola, told the court that the defendants allegedly forcefully removed the minor’s underwear before sexually assaulting her. According to the prosecution, the alleged acts included defilement of the child, in violation of relevant provisions of the law.

Part of the charges, as read by the court clerk, alleged that Abiodun Atoyebi forcefully removed the victim’s pants sometime in 2022 at Temidire Estate, Osogbo, while Sodiq Atoyebi allegedly committed a similar act and had carnal knowledge of the minor between June 16 and 18, 2024.

The prosecution said the alleged offences contravened Sections 32(1) and (2) of the Osun State Child Rights Law, 2007; Sections 360 and 218 of the Criminal Code; and Section 2(2) of the Osun State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them. Following their pleas, Justice Aderibigbe ordered that they be remanded at the Ilesa Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until December 1 for the commencement of hearing.
